About Your PTA

Oakbrook PTA was chartered in April 1986 with the following objectives:

To promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, community and place of worship.

  • To raise the standards of home life.

  • To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.

  • To bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth;

  • To develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social and spiritual education.

Oakbrook Elementary PTA is a member of the National and State PTA. National PTA is the oldest and largest volunteer association in the United States dedicated to child advocacy. For more than 100 years, National PTA has promoted the education, health, and safety of children, youth, and families, among them:

Sponsored first Leadership/Legislative Advocacy Program to help members become effective child advocates on legislative issues.

  • Published and released National Standards for developing and evaluating effective parent involvement programs.

  • Developed and distributed a national Teacher Preparation Kit in Collaboration with The Partnership for Family to support family involvement in education.

  • The PARENT Act, a National PTA initiated bill introduced in Congress and the House.

  • Launched the Parent Involvement Schools of Excellence Program in which schools nationwide are recognized for their implementation of the National Standards for Parent/Family Involvement Programs.

Like National, California State PTA was also organized in 1897. The organization’s history is also replete with accomplishments some of which include:

  • Sponsored legislation to require all school districts to adopt a parent involvement policy.

  • Sponsored legislation to ban Channel One from California classrooms and to add a component on working with parents to the teacher and administrator credentials curricula.

  • Cosponsored the California Bicycle Helmet Safety Campaign with the California Department of Health Services.

  • Established as a PTA priority and initiated “SMARTS – Bring Back the Arts” campaign to bring arts back to the schools, the community and to children. Sponsored legislation (AB869) to bring arts back to the schools.

  • Worked to and pass an initiative to require 55% majority for passage of school bond initiatives (Prop. 39).

The PTA is the largest volunteer organization working exclusively to improve the education, health, safety and well being of all children and youth. Through the PTA, parents, teachers, administrators and community members work for quality education and a true partnership between home and school.
